CONTRACT SPECIAL: Eco-friendly and excellent value for money. The Paperweight Desk available from CHAPLINS
paperweight_desk

LAUNCH OF THE PAPERWEIGHT DESK

The world’s first fully-specified mass production workstation made entirely of cardboard.

Designed by Mary Dorrington Ward and engineered by Pat Doyle, the Paperweight Desk is manufactured in the UK from 76% recycled paper and is 100% sustainable and recyclable.  Measuring 1500mm x 750mm it is built to meet European legislation for strength and stability and can take up to 100kg. It is the first of a series of cardboard furniture products to be launched over the next 12 months.

The specially made corrugated board is coated with a highly water-resistant cellulose varnish and can be assembled in just a few minutes.  It comes complete with full cable management and the adjustable legs can be positioned inset or outset.

No screws, staples, glues or tools are required for assembly and the desk comes with a 12-month warranty.

The launch follows a two year programme of research and prototyping. Spokesman Rod Fountain says:  “We are aware that cardboard furniture has enjoyed a mixed press over the last fifty years and it is going to take an exceptional product to win over the cynics.  But we think we are launching the right product at the right time – it’s elegant, extremely eco-friendly, and excellent value for money.”

Initially available in pure white, a palate of standard colours will soon be available and customers will also be able to specify their own colours or designs.

“This is a great fun product but it’s also very robust and will last for many years,” says Fountain.  “We think it’s a joy to work at because it is soft and forgiving.  It is actually quite an intimate product and a very different experience to working at a conventional steel-framed desk.”

Production begins soon on an extended range of products and the entire range will be available as a system for contract use and will also be available separately via selected retail outlets.

“We think it has very wide applications and we already have a lot of interest from large public and private sector organisations,” says Fountain.  “It looks great in the home, but it’s also a solution to the growing need for flexibility in the workplace.  You can have a whole team up and running from scratch in 24 hours with no hassle and very little cost.  When the team’s work is finished you can take the desks down and store them in minutes or simply put them in the paper recycling bin!”

Elegant Modern Lighting from Award Winning Swedish Designer Monica Förster for De Padova | CHAPLINS FURNITURE
depadova_circle_floor_light

Designed by Swedish Monica Försters for De Padova, the idea of this lamp was to go ”back to basic” and work with simple geometric shapes - a half circle. The half circle looks simplified from the side but looking at the lampshade from the front it has a wonderful double curved shape, bending over the frame.

For me the Circle floor lamp is the perfect piece for the summer months, light and airy, the shade design conjuring up images of water lilies floating on top of the water.

The Curvaceous Bend Sofa from B&B Italia is so pleasing on the eye | CHAPLINS FURNITURE
bb_italia_bend_sofa_by_patricia_urquiola_02

bb_italia_bend_sofa_by_patricia_urquiola_03

Patricia Urquiola has designed a surprising series of seats that transforms the tradition concept of the sofa. She has entitled the product Bend Sofa due to its curvaceous albeit monolithic form. It gives the appearance of being manually moulded from a supple material as if by a sculptor. In practice, it issues from a study of 3-D models and digital research. Bend Sofa effectively conveys the idea of motion by alternating full and empty spaces. Contrasting seams add to the intrinsic design on the surface. The backrest is irregularly shaped, but without compromising comfort. Curved modules – assembled starting with the seats, ottoman and corner elements – form a sofa that breaks out of the usual visual schemes and differentiates from other contemporary pieces on account of its calculated eccentricity.

Bend Sofa offers flexible composition solutions, including small linear versions, corner solutions or a spectacular (non necessarily domestic) version that can fill a space with double-sided seating arrangements, becoming the absolute centre of attention with its iconic presence.

Limited Edition Robotzki by Benedikt Achatz for Ingo Maurer - The future of desk lighting design? | CHAPLINS FURNITURE
robotski_ingo_maurer

ROBOTZKI embodies the fusion of technology and design. Benedikt Achatz re-envisions the classic workspace light via the utilization of the functional principles and articulations of the human arm. The lamp is a response to many of the interdisciplinary design questions of today: lighting, user interface, product design and automation technologies.

In robotzki, the use of technology and precision mechanics within a typically static utensil expresses something entirely new. the led lamp is controlled electronically using five motors, several programmable microcontroller modules and a software interface that remains open to future additional input/output devices (e.g. sensors and light regulators). Robotzki provides a multi-dimensional interactive experience for the user in its flexible form and the unique sounds produced by the automated motor functions of the lamp. The fluid manipulation of this light allows for multi-use applications in any environment.

Ingo Maurer about ROBOTZKI:

"For me it is essential for the future to leave conventional thinking behind and think of the unthinkable. To support ROBOTZKI took less than ten seconds. The result is a fresh and provocative reinterpretation of a classic icon: the task lamp."

At this time, ROBOTZKI can memorize 3 positions (the user moves the lamp manually by hand or optional via a joystick to the desired position that will be saved). A remote control enables the user to change the positions, dim the light etc.

The interaction possibilities are only limited by your own imagination. There could be an iPhone App that controls the lamp, or a voice control unit, or a gesture recognition system that will steer the lamp and so many other ways of interaction... but still, you can always use the lamp the classic way: by hand.

When furniture interprets the latest fashion trends | CHAPLINS FURNITURE
dedon_special_edition_ddc

The Luxury Outdoor furniture brand DEDON have reinterpreted some of the most classic patterns in fashion for their collection SLIM LINE by Jean-Marie Massaud and have created four exceptional new collections.

Fashion meets furniture like it has never been done before! Dedon always research into new materials and new applications, especially those used in other fields for other products. The fashion industry is one of the main references used in this collection and the reason why I love it so much! Dedon use  exceptional craftsmanship and extraordinary skills to enable them to adapt any material and inspiration they choose to: With the DEDON fiber there is an unlimited amount of innovative possibilities.

dedon_special_edition_ddc_02
There is the “Pieds de poule” pattern for the D.D.C Cambon model which invites you to one of the most luxurious street in Paris. You can achieve a classic look in your Lounge with these beautiful pieces of black and white dog-tooth patterned furniture. Giving you a touch of  the most up to date fashion trends in Paris.

dedon_special_edition_ddc_03
The D.D.C. Edinburgh or “tartan” pattern, is another classic which can be traced back in history to Scotland. This pattern is really trendy because it is linked with contemporary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. It can make a lounge very personal and original looking and give it some real punk attitude!

dedon_special_edition_ddc_011
My favourite model is the D.D.C. Marseille Collection with white and blue stripes because this is exactly what fashion is, for the moment. Moreover, that pattern inspires feelings of the summer time, freshness, sea and trips. It is a very refreshing design and gives off a relaxing ambiance - ideal for a terrace or a lounge.

Many thanks to Celine our French Exchange Student for her wonderful contribution!

Edra introduce the Barbarian Collection at Milan Furniture Fair 2010 | CHAPLINS FURNITURE
edra_milan_furniture_fair_2010_01
Barbarians

This is the theme of edra’s 2010 collection, curated by Art Director Massimo Morozzi. A tribute to the Barbarians who with passion and drive, fresh blood and daring, descended from the furthest outposts to occupy the heartland of the Western world, marking the end of the classical era and the beginning of the modern era.

The project explores the twin themes of natural materials and colours with equal passion and energy, sharing the same blood and daring as the Barbarians, on a quest to conquer land, fire and forests, and using matter as the design matrix.

Like the raffia featured in the Cabana storage unit, the aluminium of the Campana lamp, the terracotta of the Cotto table and the natural hide of the Brenno sofa. Or the materials used to cover the new Sponge, Attila and Leather Works designs.

A meaningful and well thought out choice, reflecting the determination of a barbarian horde, with no hesitation and no turning back. The results are strong, spirited and overwhelmingly natural.

edra_brenno
BRENNO
Francesco Binfaré - 2010
Artfully worked natural leather gives the sofa a softly indulgent appearance. The frame is in plywood and metal and the stuffing is in Gellyfoam covered with a thick layer of goose down. The leather upholstery is generously plump by design, affording the kind of welcoming softness and comfort that appeases the eye even before the body.

edra_cotto
COTTO
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
The frame and legs are in stainless steel and the top is supported by a thick sheet of aluminium. Eight large, randomly shaped pieces of treated, finely textured terracotta form the table top. Each section is stamped underneath with the words “Made in Italy” and “hand made”. The Cotto table is ideal for indoor and outdoor use, its shape and materials placing the design light years away from the usual stereotypes.

edra_campana
CAMPANA
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
The lampshade is assembled out of around 180 variously shaped pieces of laser-cut glossy anodised aluminium. Each piece is absolutely one of a kind, as the shapes are attached quite randomly, and positioned in no particular order, so each lampshade is unique. The Campana suggests the form of the object inspiring it, but in a lightweight, ecosustainable metal, aluminium, which can be recycled an infinite number of times with no loss of quality. The light source in the centre is ideal for illuminating table-tops and interiors.

edra_cabana
CABANA
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
A storage unit arranged around a central column supporting five shelves: the structure, in aluminium and other metals, is entirely concealed by dangling lengths of fire-proofed raffia.

edra_scrigno
SCRIGNO
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2009/10
Stand-alone cupboard, sideboards and drawers. Every visible surface is clad in shiny splinters of laser-cut Reflex, a reflective acrylic material in gold, silver and other colours.
