Luxurious Stone with a Timeless Appeal - Marvellous Marble products available at CHAPLINS

March 10th, 2010 by jamespress

As the material of choice for ancient Greek and Roman sculptors, marble has always been a symbol of tradition and refined taste.

So it’s no surprise it features as a key element in a host of modern classics, such as Achille Castiglione’s 1962 Arco Lamp for Flos, and the 1956 Tulip Table by Eero Saarinen for Knoll.

The beauty of these pieces is that they transcend fashion and work in any interior environment, from formal dining rooms to contemporary living spaces’ says Justin Pratt, MD of Knoll Europe. ‘Plus, the marble elements are more durable than veneer or laminate, so perfect for day use.’*

Both the Arco Floor Lamp and the Tulip Table are available to purchase from our new look Online Store at www.chaplinsstore.co.uk

The Eames Plastic Chair – Only the Authorised Originals from Vitra available through CHAPLINS.

March 8th, 2010 by jamespress

dsw-04

Due to the technical advancement of modern plastics, Vitra and the Eames family decided to reinstate production of the Eames Plastic Chair in 1998, using polypropylene rather than fibreglass, which had given cause for concern on health and ecological grounds and use of which had been halted by Vitra in 1993.

Charles and Ray Eames were always ahead of the game on environmental issues and the production of the chair in a contemporary plastic accords with their design philosophy. By the end of her life in 1988, Ray Eames was convinced of the environmental damage caused by fibreglass in landfills and was keen to source a new material. Clearly, any continuation of an out of date production process, such as working with fibreglass, runs contrary to the Eames philosophy.

Companies such as Modernica and Dwell have for several years manufactured look-a-likes of the Eames Plastic Chair using this outmoded production method. Statements by Modernica asserting that their production uses the original moulds are incorrect. Modernica simply produce and sell unauthorised look-a-likes of the Eames Plastic Chair.

Eames Demetrios applies a simple rule when it comes to distinguishing between the original and a copy: “I am frequently asked whether it is difficult to tell an authentic Eames design and a copy apart. It isn’t difficult at all. A glance at the label will suffice: in Europe it should read Vitra. If it does, the item is genuine. If the origin of the chair isn’t Vitra, then it also isn’t Eames, period.”

Authentic Vitra originals are now available to purchase from the comfort of your own home through our new look online store… www.chaplinsstore.co.uk

Hans Wegner’s Oxchair celebrates its 50th Anniversary - available through CHAPLINS

March 5th, 2010 by jamespress

wegner_50th_anniversary_oxford_chair
Oxchair was Wegner’s preferred lounge chair

Oxchair was designed by Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007). In 2010 the chair celebrates its 50 anniversary. Like other pieces of furniture which are now regarded as modern classics Oxchair was ahead of its time when it was launched in 1960. Making use of superior craftsmanship skills Wegner had created a sophisticated construction which exceeded what the production department was able to accommodate at the time. That was the reason the chair was pulled from production until 1989 when Erik Jørgensen was contacted by Wegner in the hopes of bringing Oxchair back to life. Today Oxchair stands as a sculptural manifestation of the very best which Danish furniture has to offer. The result is an organic upholstered piece of furniture that presents itself to the beholder as if formed from one single block.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary a limited edition of Oxchair is put into production, upholstered with exclusive vegetable leather of very high quality. The chairs will be numbered and marked with a special jubilee tag.

The buyer of a jubilee Oxchair is also invited to visit the Erik Jørgensen factory in Svendborg to see how the Oxchair is being produced true to the high standards of craftsmanship from 1960 when the chair was presented the very first time. Besides the factory visit the buyer is invited to stay one night at a hotel in Svendborg. However, the transport to and from Svendborg is not included in the jubilee package.

Please contact the Chaplins showroom on 020 8421 1779 for further information and prices.
