Benjamin Hubert has won the international competition to find Poltrona Frau’s Centenary armchair.

The armchair for the 100 year old company enters into its iconic limited edition collection to represent its history and future.

The brief of the competition was to utilise the traditional upholstery techniques under the theme ‘a chair to spend time in’ and judged under the categories of; formal appearance, representation of the given theme, use and interpretation of leather and comfort.

Juliet, the chair awarded winner of the competition, is inspired by the Italian renaissance fashion detail the ‘Juliet sleeve’ a sleeve which tightly fits the arm and has a large deconstructed ‘puff’ on the shoulder. This inspiration was used to communicate the properties of leather upholstery.

An international judging panel made up of personalities from various worlds of design, architecture, journalism and business –adjudicated the winning project at the 2012 Design Village in Milan.

Mini Papilio and Love Papilio by Naoto Fukasawa

Naoto Fukasawa has conceived a small sofa, recreating and expanding the design of Grande Papilio armchair. Ideal for both the home and public areas, it seats two and envelops the users with its broad backrest. And thus the name: Love Papilio. Another version of the armchair was also created, Mini Papilio. This is a small armchair that is also perfect for public areas where it can be presented in bright fabric or leather covers. Two are the options for the swivel base: a traditional 360 degree rotation, or an automatic return to the pre-set position.

Theo by Vincent Van Duysen

Theo has a suspended, floating seat that contrasts with its base. It is supported by a steel frame (glossy chrome-plated, black chrome-plated or painted bronzed nickel) whose finishes can be coordinated with covers, available in leather enriched with tailored details, single colour fabric or bicolour colour fabric for the structure and the back cushion. This is an armchair that can convey diverse languages through its different covers and readily lend itself to customization.

Husk and Husk Outdoor by Patricia Urquiola

The new dining chair version completes the Husk Outdoor Collection, which now meets a variety of size and functional needs. The body is in a solid white, which suits bright outdoor environments; the four legs are in white or black painted metal, while the cushions, which allow water to run off and are attached to the backrest with two snaps, are covered in high- tech fabric that can with stand the elements. The Husk series has been further expanded by patricia urquiola to include a comfortable dining chair. Its distinguishing feature is an unmistakable modular shell with a ‘capitonné’ design. The small armchair, inspired by an investigation of new proportions, is not intended to be used exclusively at the table but can also find a variety of uses in spaces outside the home. The two traditional colours for the plastic shell, white and black, are now joined by the new thick leather version in five colourways, which radically change the look of the chair. Two options are also available for the bases: fixed with four legs in different finishes or a swivel with four star base. The fabric or leather covers are quilted in a design that mirrors the form of the supporting shell.

Tobi-Ishi by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby

The inspiration from the east is clear even in the name of the table Tobi-Ishi, which refers to the ornamental stones used in traditional japanese gardens. The form of the table, which is distinguished by the cantilever top and bases that look different depending on the perspective, allude to those smooth stones. With unexpected materials, it blends technology and handicraft. After considerable experimentation aimed at creating a fashionable granite look, today the table bases have cores in baydur ® bayer (structural polyurethane foam) and a wooden top. All the parts have been treated with cement grout to create a sort of superficial leather that recalls a history of high-tech craftsmanship.

“When you see them, you can’t help feeling moved; when you understand them, you are full of wonder seeing a future we thought unreachable and couldn’t imagine this beautiful”. Ernesto Gismondi introduces IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE’s lighting, as conceived by Issey Miyake and his Reality Lab., and brought to life by Artemide.

“IN-EI” – Japanese for “shadow, shadiness, nuance”. The art of lighting has a conceptual and technological heritage at the Miyake Design Studio, dating back to 2010, when Issey Miyake and his research and development team called Reality Lab., presented “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE”. This new process was developed using a mathematical program with 3- D geometric principals by Jun Mitani. 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE is an extremely ingenious way by which to make clothing, and a process that provides yet another example of directions the quest for innovative textiles technologies can take. The project comes from the intersection of creativity and mathematics, resulting in clothing that can be folded flat and become 3D shapes, starting from a single piece of cloth. As the Reality Lab. explored “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE”’s potential in areas beyond clothing, a natural extension of the process was lighting products. IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE was born from a collaboration with Artemide marrying their lighting expertise with the Lab.’s innovative approach to the material and design.

“I am extremely proud of this collaboration”, Ernesto Gismondi explains; “Issey Miyake devotes his extraordinary artistic commitment to a quest dedicated to men’s needs and existence. The same commitment you can see in The Human Light, Artemide’s mission and philosophy. We share Miyake’s values and visions”. Such similarities of vision come from shared core values behind both Artemide’s and Reality Lab.’s research. The project revolves around a fabric derived from entirely recycled materials, diffusing light in extremely interesting ways; it is a re-treated fibre made using PET bottles. The bottles are processed using an innovative technology that reduces both energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to 40% when compared to the production of new materials. Issey Miyake’s artistic vision, applied to the new 3D mathematical process, combines the Japanese tradition of light with Miyake’s unique ability to translate tradition into modernity. Artemide animates these sustainable and striking shapes using LED lighting, today’s most relevant sustainable technology. The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting collection was co-developed and manufactured by Artemide. It is a collection of free-standing, table and hanging lights. Each lampshade is created using 2 or 3D mathematic principals, where light and shade harmoniously alternate. Miyake’s unique folding technology creates both statuesque forms as well as sufficient solidity. The structure of the recycled material, together with an additional surface treatment allows these shades to perfectly keep their shape without the need for internal frame, and to be re-shaped when needed. They can be easily stored flat when not in use.

The innovative meaning of the “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE” project lies in its numbers; 1 refers to the one-piece fabric used for each product; 2 comes from the 2D initial folding process; 3 refers to 3D; 5, preceded by an empty space, refers to the metamorphosis turning folded shapes into clothing or objects. Five also is an auspicious number, and represents the desire for the clothing or objects to continue to assume new dimensions in the future.

Description from DEDON:

The ultimate hanging lounge, SWINGREST is one of the first products to emerge from DEDON ISLAND resort, our Outdoor Living Lab in Siargao, The Philippines. Pouzet, co-architect and designer of DEDON ISLAND, took his inspiration for the SWINGREST from the extra-high ceilings of the resort’s villas. Borrowing the basket-like bottom from his earlier creation, the NESTREST, he has managed to create an altogether new work that feels even more spacious (and fits more people) while seeming to take up less space.

Perfect for hanging on the terrace or veranda, or even indoors, the SWINGREST is distinguished by the purity and simplicity of its concept. Rather than complicate it unnecessarily, Pouzet decided to focus instead on refining the details of the design, developing, for instance, the SWINGREST’s elegant suspension system, its rotating Corian® tabletop and the specially-created cord that wraps around its exposed tubing. Available in a Natural colored weave, SWINGREST comes with an optional fabric curtain cover that’s perfect for making shade and giving privacy while letting those inside see out.

This magical creation by Marcel Wanders is currently on display at our exclusive showroom in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour for 4 weeks only, it is the first and only one in the UK at present so don’t miss out!

Chrysalis is a magic vase. It is not the typical flower funeral, it is a festive evergreen flower fountain. The way a chrysalis hosts the metamorphosis of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. The same way this magic vase, out of nothing grows its fabulous flowers of light. There is a hidden secret, there is life inside, glowing, to come out, to fly as flowers between flowers.

With the Chrysalis floor lamp Marcel Wanders engages with one of the Flos brand’s most distinctive materials: the ‘cocoon’ resin used in the 1960s by the Castiglioni brothers and by Tobia Scarpa. The French designer uses this resin for its adaptability and high strength. More than 50 years have passed since the first applications of ‘cocoon’ in lighting and although the production technique has remained the same, the material has been improved and softened. As in the past, the resin is sprayed in three phases onto the skeleton of the lamp, and then covered with a special transparent finishing to protect it and improve the shine. Exploiting and enhancing the characteristics of this dynamic, malleable material, with Chrysalis Wanders has created an elegant lamp that draws its inspiration from a classic flower vase or the amphorae of antiquity.

Years ago, with his Zeppelin lamp, the designer had already demonstrated how suited this material was to creating highly original and extremely beautiful light fittings. With his latest creation Chrysalis, the designer revisits the perfect shape of the amphora but increases its size to two metres in height. Impressive and striking, in Wanders’ imagination Chrysalis becomes a ‘magic vase’ which, like a chrysalis, is waiting to become a butterfly. These visionary metaphors don’t disappoint our expectations. As well as producing light by means of a fluorescent tube in the main body, another light source at the top projects decorative beams of light onto the ceiling through a polyurethane ornament. Reflecting the original idea of the ‘magic vase’, Chrysalis scatters ethereal luminous flowers around itself, creating a pleasing and captivating play of reflections.

Dutch brand moooi presented us with one of the highlights of the Milan Furniture Fair this year with their ‘altdeutsche möbel’ collection. A beautifully hand-painted blanket chest, grandfather clock and cupboard made up the collection designed by dutch-belgian duo studio job. The aesthetic aspect of the pieces are derived from the decorative manner antique frankish furniture, translating old german hand-painted objects into playful designs.

Checking the time will never be the same with Studio Job’s Grandfather clock, a playful interpretation of old Frankish furniture holding all its beauty and atmosphere. A Studio Job souvenir is hidden in a secret compartment of the clock. A treasure to be found…

An ode to the beauty of old Frankish furniture, Studio Job’s elaborately decorative cupboard is nothing less than a symbolic interpretation of life’s essence. Roses, skulls, keys and feathers tickle our imagination and point towards life’s beauty and mystery. From now on finding our favourite trousers could become a philosophical experience…

There is always something magic about the word chest, even if it’s simply meant to store blankets in a charming vintage way…
In this case the magic originates from the intricate pattern of symbols designed on its surface, creating a mysterious message that waits to be deciphered.

Mettsass Table by Ettore Sottsass

In the 70′s, Sottsass made many designs for BD. One of the first was this table baptised with the name “Mettsass”, which dates back to 1972.
The table Mettsass has not lost its personality with wich Sottsass had designed some 40 years ago. BD has reproduced the structure with the same dimensions and colours.

The structure is made of flat sheets of steel, painted in red RAL 3001 or black. The glass is painted in the same color as the structure.

This month, Aqua introduces new lighting pieces that are starting points for additional collections in the Atelier’s ever growing lighting range.

The 2012 collections include new work by Aqua Founders Ayala and Albi Serfaty in collaboration with designers Sadeh Halbrecht and Benad Dar.

The Atelier is excited to introduce new materials and techniques that add a new look to the Aqua brand. The handmade imprimatur paired with advanced technology is as always an imperative.

Mimosa Collection Design by Ayala Serfaty with Sadeh Halbrecht

With the Mimosa Collection Aqua introduces new characteristics to its lighting range. The design of the shade construction was inspired by neurons and while the shape is organic it is contemporary and expresses subtleness and lightness. The shades are made from a laser cut, galvanized metal structure sprayed with clear polymer resulting in a white membrane that perfectly distributes the light coming from an energy saving CFL bulb. The shades are sculpted by hand allowing some variations to occur from shade to shade; nevertheless, the general dimensions are maintained. Mimosa is a highly customisable collection and may be adapted to fit spaces of any size.

While the materials as always play a key role in the design and development, those used here are not new to the Atelier. Ayala Serfaty has been using polymer for her Soma Light Sculptures for many years and has now used this sophisticated technique on her latest lamps designed for Aqua.

Mino Collection Design by Albi Serfaty with Benad Dar

With its modernist shapes the new Mino lighting pieces are a perfect complement to Aqua’s existing silk lighting collections. Mino adds streamlined, geometric shapes to the Atelier’s range of floor lamps. The pieces may also be looked at as light screens and the biggest shade can act as a room divider for larger spaces.

For the first time Aqua has taken its iconic silk material and applied it to a newly designed lamp structure. Instead of sculpting the silk on hand bent metal, it is sculpted over a specially developed polycarbonate, vacuum formed shell lit with energy saving CFL bulbs. Another special feature of this collection is the possibility of up to two silk colors in one shade. The shape together with the envelope silk draping, gives the shades an elegant yet humble expression.
